Queen Victoria Memorial Hall (Old Town Hall), Victoria Parade.

A memorial fund for the late Queen Victoria was opened in February, 1901, the same year she died. In September, 1902, the decision was taken to build a new concrete hall with a 70 foot frontage on the seaward side of Victoria Parade. During this time, the hall itself and the Town Board rooms and offices would be on the ground floor, while the Mechanics’ Institute (which had previously functioned as the only available Town Hall) would be housed on the upper floor. The Governor, Sir Henry Jackson, on February 24, 1904 laid the foundation stone for the hall and it was opened the same year with the handing of the keys to the warden F. J Barnet, by the contractors.
