Museum Visit - Hibiscus 2007 Contestants
Brief
The Hibiscus pageant is a week long festival that is celebrated annually in
the month of August since 1956. This festival is adored and attracts all
walks of life in Fiji. The school children love the festivities during this
week long festival.
The Fiji Museum was a hive of activity on August 24th 2007, as the Miss
Hibiscus contestants visited the Museum as their official tour. It was also
a wonderful moment for the staff to meet with the girls vying for the Miss
Hibiscus title.
Throughout the year the Fiji Museum, in cooperation with the Friends of
the Fiji Museum, local and international sponsors, organize events designed
not only to raise money, but to heighten awareness of the museum, its
collection and its activities. The Fiji Museum verandah, art gallery and
temporary exhibition space can also be hired for external exhibitions
and events. Arrangements for hire of these spaces can be made through
the Fiji Museum.
Butterfly Book
Launch
The University
of the South Pacific in collaboration with the Fiji Museum launched the book
"Butterflies Of The Fiji Islands" written by Sunil R Prasad and Hilda Waqa-Sakiti. The book was launched at the Fiji Museum by Pro Vice Chancellor
Dr Ana Taufe'ulungaki.
This guide book is the
first butterfly identification book for Fiji and it describes the 47
species recorded from the Fiji Islands. Basic morphological
descriptions are presented with local distribution maps and
worldwide distributions.
